What Is Breast Reduction?
Breast Reduction Surgery is also known as Reduction Mammaplasty. It is a surgical procedure done to remove the fat, glandular tissue, and skin to make the breasts small. Besides improving the physical appearance of the breast and providing breast lift, it also reduces the back, neck, and shoulder pain of the patients. This procedure can also help in addressing any asymmetry between the two breasts.
As per Dr. Mansher, the expert of Breast Reduction based out of Manhattan, New York on edifying us about Breast Reduction suggests that the procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes up to two or three hours to complete.
Reduction techniques vary depending on the size, shape, and amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed. There are two components of the surgery which are independent of each other:
- The blood flow to the nipple-areolar complex needs to be intact to ensure viable nipple post-operatively. Depending on the patients’ requirements, various pedicles such as superomedial pedicles, inferior pedicles, and superior pedicles are commonly used. In rare cases, a free nipple graft is also considered.
- The second component of the surgery involves the technique for skin resection. A lollipop incision is typically made which goes around the nipple and follows the lower pole of the breast vertically. In some cases, where the Nipple-Inframammary fold length needs to be shortened, the incision is extended horizontally to create an anchor pattern.
After the incision is made, excess breast tissue, fat, or skin is removed to reduce the size of the breast. Thereafter the breasts are reshaped by the repositioning of the nipple and areola. After this, the breasts are covered with a gauge dressing or bandage. It should be noted that the results and the recovery time differ from one patient to another.
